STNG NEWS ALERTS ::
An empty lot along McBride Street in Elgin is owned by the city and has upset a few neighbors because it had not been mowed as of Tuesday, even as other property owners in town are being cited for letting the grass in their yards grow too long. (Michael Smart/Staff Photographer)
Ron Conley describes McBride Street as a "goat trail," with overgrown weeds taking over the city property. What the neighborhood resident says he doesn't understand is why the "city of Elgin is not cutting weeds on their property but is able to give tickets to its citizens." Last year, the city wrote about 600 tickets relating to high weeds, according to city spokeswoman Sue Olafson. Elgin city ordinance requires homeowners to mow weeds higher than eight inches.

It was almost as if they had stepped outside of high school softball for a day and into the college ranks.

Coaching year-round, Burlington Central's Scot Sutherland admitted to being a little burnt out by the time softball practice rolled around in early March. He wasn't as fired up as usual, but knew he had the pieces in place for another 20-win season and a conference title. On paper, Sutherland had some teams in years past that had higher expectations. Ribfest may be moving from Knoch Park, which touches a nerve with some of its closest neighbors. But after this year, the festival site will be cut by 5 acres, so discussions are under way that include possibly moving the 22-year-old fest to Nike Park.
